HQ News Briefs: Spring 2009
Common Threads at the Conference
The North-American Interfraternity Conference hosted 160 Interfraternity Council officers and advisers for the 2009 IFC Academy. That number included 11 members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon: John Allhusen (Wyoming), Travis Beach (Wyoming), Lawrence Bustos (New Mexico), Kyle Depew (Wyoming), Ryan Foristal (Wyoming), Collin Good (St. Leo), Samuel Mallah (South Florida), Sam Schira (Kettering), Shane Skop (Kettering), Pat Toomey (Wyoming) and Frank Weller (Frostburg State). The academy is a one-day, 14-hour program that allows participants to return to their campuses with a renewed commitment to working together. In addition, attendees heard from Josh Orendi, CEO of Phired Up Productions, a company that specializes in values-based recruitment programming.
The Big 300 … And Counting

Sigma Alpha Epsilon achieved a proud milestone in its history with the installation of its 300th chapter in late February. Eminent Supreme Archon Todd Buchanan handed a charter to the men of Wisconsin Lambda-Chi at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on the evening of February 24, 2009. And it doesn’t stop there. The Fraternity continues to expand on campuses at excellent colleges and universities, and two new colonies are now part of our Realm: Texas Omega at Midwestern State University and Pennsylvania Kappa at Kutztown University.
Registration? Access Granted
Members who will be registering for official events at www.sae.net will notice a change from previous online registrations. The process requires registrants to log into their own members-only account in order to begin the process. This change allows your personal data record to talk to the event record, which means members will have to enter fewer fields. Every member is automatically granted an account. If you’ve never claimed your account, visit www.sae.net and click on the “Members Only” menu tab. Then, follow the link for “Claim Your Account.” For questions about members’ online accounts, contact Director of Information Systems Patrick Stiff at (800) 233-1856, ext. 217, or at pstiff@sae.net.
Meet the Future
A crop of top-notch undergraduate members have emerged as our newest national leaders for several upcoming events: The Phoenix Institute and the 74th John O. Moseley Leadership School. They applied for their respective positions, and they were picked for their outstanding credentials — both in the Fraternity and on their campuses.

No One Likes Taxes
Beginning in 2008, tax-exempt organizations with gross receipts of $25,000 a year or less will be required to remind the IRS of their tax-exempt status by filing a Form 990-N, Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) for Tax-Exempt Organizations not required to File Form 990 or 990- EZ. The change will affect most Sigma Alpha Epsilon undergraduate chapters, alumni associations and house corporations. These organizations will be required to submit electronically a Form 990-N, also known as the e-Postcard, to the IRS annually.
The new filing requirement will take effect for the 2008-2009 fiscal year, and the due date is the 15th of the 5th month following the end of your fiscal year. Organizations that are required to file a Form 990-PF and those required to file a standard Form 990 or 990-EZ tax return are exempt from this requirement.
The PPA requires the IRS to revoke the tax-exempt status of any organization that fails to meet all filing requirements for three consecutive years. This means that any organization that fails to comply with the new filing requirements as specified above will lose its tax-exempt status on the filing date of the third year. The organization will then be required to reapply for tax-exempt status and comply with the new filing regulations. For more information, you are encouraged to visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov or call the IRS at (877) 829-5500.
Please note, each chapter, house corporation and alumni association will file an electronic Form 990-N under its own Federal Tax ID number using Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s group ruling number. The group ruling number for chapters and alumni associations is 0228. The group ruling number for house corporations is 5312.

I’m glad you are publishing the Record on line, but disappointed there is no “Chapter Eternal” with brothers passing away.

Ditto to brother Daniels’s response.

Some of our Brother’s families would probably like for the Record to indicate foundations, scholarships and/or charities for remembrance donations. My company matches all my charitable donations. Thanks to Daniel Riggle and Bob Gundersen for their thoughtful input. Phi Alpha!
