Iowa Gamma hosted its 34th annual Province Tau Leadership School in early November. More than 225 brothers from all 13 chapters and colonies attended. Delegates enjoyed sessions focused on the 12 Core Areas of the True Gentleman Initiative, heard Fraternity Historian Joe Walt present his “SAE Story” and participated in a panel discussion with distinguished alumni from central Iowa. Other alumni faculty included Eminent Supreme Deputy Archon Marty Wiglesworth, Seth Vredenburg (Simpson ’01), Darin Ferguson (Northern Iowa ’95), Ritual committee member John Bulcock, Regional Director Mike Mansfield, Past Eminent Supreme Archon Lou Smith, retired Brig. Gen. Dan McGowan and Associate Executive Director Brandon Weghorst. At the awards banquet, Wiglesworth presented the Province Tau Outstanding Chapter Award to Minnesota Alpha. Leadership School Chairman Ryan Crampton received special recognition for organizing the weekend successfully.

Rockhurst

In early December, brothers and alumni from Missouri Delta visited the house of Marge Kennedy to sing holiday carols and Fraternity songs. Kennedy is the spouse of the late Dr. Samuel Kennedy, who served as chapter adviser for more than 20 years. She had been battling cancer for years and, though too weak to come outside, enjoyed the cheer the men conveyed. She stood at her door, even singing along to “Sigma, Sigma Alpha.” She passed away in late December, and many alumni and undergraduate members served as pallbearers.

South Carolina-Columbia

This year’s Kiawah Island Half/Full Marathon was a success for Sigma Alpha Epsilon, which ran the race in conjunction with Alpha Delta Pi. The event, which featured more than 4,500 runners, saw Aaron Harkins finish first among the Greeks in the half marathon with a 1:37 time, placing him 105th overall. Drew Davies came in second at 1:47 and Ellison Neese, third, at 1:49. Josh Miller, Austin Williams, Matt Muburak and Stryker Huffman also finished the race with impressive times. The chapter raised more than $4,000 for Running for a Cause, its annual philanthropic project. Members also contributed more than 350 hours of mentoring service to a nearby elementary school.

UC-Irvine

Mitchell Winans (’08) was honored with the University of California- Irvine’s Living Our Values Award in late December. The award, given to students who embody the values of respect, intellectual curiosity, integrity and commitment, was given due to Winans for his work at California Eta. He served his chapter as last year’s Eminent Archon, where he developed a study program for his brothers.

Texas Chi hosted its fourth annual Rock the Campus for the Cure in late September to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The concert took place in the Student Union Mall in honor of Brad Monks, a brother from UT-Dallas who died from lymphoma in May 2005. This year’s concert, originally scheduled for September 13, was postponed due to Hurricane Ike but raised more than $17,000 with the help of corporate sponsors Harley Davidson, Golden Chick, Fluid Consulting and others. More than 400 people attended the show. For more information or to support the cause, visit the www.rockthecampusforthecure.com.

UC-Santa Barbara

Nick Mancuso continues his successful run in endurance racing, taking top honors at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill event held by the National Auto Sports Association. Mancuso piloted the Mazda Miata MX-5 that took honors in the E1 class and finished in fifth place overall. Thunderhill consists of 475 laps around a 3-mile, 15-turn circuit. Mancuso’s car led for most of the race. Though he is uncertain about his racing plans for the 2009 season, he hopes to race in the event again next year.

Valdosta State

Garrett Spence and Brett Bassford helped to coach a youth soccer team called the SAE Lions. The 11- and 12-year-olds ended up in second place in their division at the Valdosta Parks and Recreation Department, and the brother coaches helped to teach the kids about soccer, good sportsmanship and being gentlemen and ladies. Additionally, the chapter’s annual Paul A. Burnette Memorial Soccer Tournament will be held April 11, 2009, at the Valdosta State Recreation Fields. The men also want to plan a golf tournament weekend at the Valdosta Country Club and Stone Creek Golf Course and conduct a two-week, all-Greek blood drive.
